The Maldives - Maladweep (Malayalam) is a tourist paradise. Officially the Republic of Maldives (ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ ޖުމްހޫރިއްޔާ), is a South Asian island country, located in the Indian Ocean, situated in the Arabian Sea. The Maldives are a chain (the name "Maldives" means "island chain", see Mala) of 19 island groups in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India and Sri Lanka. The highest elevation of 2.4 m is located on Vilingilli Island in Addu Atoll. The Maldives are off the coast of Kerala. Therefore, medium-sized Maldivians come to Thiruvananthapuram for treatment and shopping.
The Maldives can be distinguished in islands for local people and tourist islands (like Kuramathi, Bandos, Vabbinfaru or Meerufenfushi). Maldivians are admitted on the tourist islands only as personnel. Since 2009 it is possible for tourists to vacation on local islands.
The Maldivian language, Dhivehi, derives from the medieval Sinhalese, but is now completely independent. It is the only official language of the country, but in recent times the Arabic language is gaining in importance. Dhivehi is written from right to left in the Thaana script, as well as the Latin transcription ("Dhivehi Letin") is used. Divehi has 3 different dialect levels. The highest level (the purest language) known as "Reethi Bhas" is used by the elite of society as well as on radio and television. The second stage is used for the honor of the dignitaries and elders of society. The third stage is used by ordinary people. Thaana is said to have been introduced by the reign of Mohamed Thakurufaanu.
Tourism and fisheries form the basis of the Maldivian economy. The fishing of humans has led the country for centuries. After the development of tourism, people see a retreat from fishing. Tourism brings foreign exchange and employment opportunities.
Every atoll in the Maldives / Maladweep is like a string of pearls. The pearls in this necklace are small islands. The area of each small island is one or two square kilometers. Every atoll has many uninhabited islands. The islands of the atoll are well connected by road.
There are shrubs and flowers, but not many trees. The main trees are coconut, mango and algae. It is difficult to cultivate sandy and salty land. The whole crops are banana, coconut, hemp, pumpkin, paprika and mango. Drinking water is traditionally used as groundwater and rainwater. However, seawater is now used to purify seawater using desalination technology.
